Financial intelligence firm S&P Global has unveiled the S&P Digital Markets 50 Index, the world’s first hybrid benchmark combining traditional equities with digital assets. The new index includes 35 publicly listed companies involved in digital asset businesses, blockchain infrastructure, and financial services, along with 15 major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH).

Developed by S&P Dow Jones Indices, this launch marks a major expansion of S&P’s digital asset-related benchmarking services and reflects the growing institutional integration of cryptocurrency markets.
Institutional Demand Drives Innovation
According to S&P Global, the creation of this benchmark was driven by rising institutional demand for structured exposure to digital assets. The firm noted that investors across North America, Europe, and Asia are now incorporating crypto as part of their diversification, growth, and innovation strategies.
Cameron Drinkwater, Chief Product and Operations Officer at S&P Global, said that transparent and reliable benchmarks are essential for the next stage of digital asset adoption.
“Just as traditional markets rely on trusted indices, the digital asset ecosystem now requires equally robust and independent benchmarks to guide participation and growth,” he stated.
Bridging Traditional Finance and DeFi
The new index is scheduled to become available on financial platform Dinari by the end of 2025. Dinari specializes in tokenized U.S. public securities, and in collaboration with S&P, has created dShares, blockchain-based tokens designed to track the performance of the index on-chain.
Anna Roblewska, Chief Business Officer at Dinari, explained that the initiative demonstrates how blockchain infrastructure can modernize trusted financial benchmarks:
“Making the S&P Digital Markets 50 accessible via dShares shows how decentralized technology can enhance transparency and accessibility for investors.”
Through this approach, participants will be able to gain exposure to both U.S. equities and digital assets in a single, transparent product, a major step toward the convergence of traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi).
The introduction of the S&P Digital Markets 50 Index underscores a broader shift in the crypto landscape: from speculative trading toward integration into mainstream portfolio strategies. Analysts say the index’s hybrid structure could serve as a blueprint for future institutional investment tools, enabling clearer performance tracking across digital and traditional markets.
