Bitcoin sits near $84,000. It’s down almost 3% on the day but up roughly 10% on the week. The bigger story isn’t the price. It’s the breadth reading underneath it, and the question it raises in the crypto vs stocks debate: is crypto market breadth actually healthier than U.S. equities right now?
As of Wednesday, 88 of the top 100 cryptocurrencies by market cap were trading above their 200-day moving averages. That list includes both Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The equity side tells a different story. 257 S&P500 constituents were below that same trend line. That leaves only about 49% of the index above it, even with the benchmark near record highs.

Crypto vs Stocks: Which Market Is Really Stronger Under the Surface?
The comparison isn’t apples-to-apples. One sample covers the 100 largest crypto assets, while the other covers all 500 S&P 500 members. The two are also calculated under different methodologies.
Read directionally rather than definitively, the gap still matters. It suggests broader participation in crypto than the equity headlines imply, a theme also explored in recent Bitcoin ETF flow coverage.
The figures come from market data shared by trader and analyst Scott Melker. Most of the 88 qualifying tokens weren’t just above their 200-day averages. They were also holding above their 50-day and 100-day lines. Traders typically read that layered signal as trend confirmation rather than noise.
There’s an important catch. The metric measures participation, not magnitude. Bitcoin and Ethereum still trade well below their all-time highs, even as they clear long-term averages.
BTC recently made a round trip from roughly $75,000 to briefly above $87,000. Renewed selling then pulled it back toward $84,000.
That mix of broad participation and prices still far from peaks is what makes this setup stand out in the crypto vs stocks comparison. It looks very different from a market that has already priced in the good news, a dynamic also tracked in altcoin-strength coverage beyond BTC.

Can Bitcoin Hold Its Bullish Channel Above $81,800?

On the hourly chart, Bitcoin has stayed inside the broader bullish channel that defined its advance off the $75,000 low.
A break below the channel’s lower boundary would be the first technical warning that momentum is fading. If that happens, initial support sits near $82,400. That’s the level where the rally’s first leg stalled for several sessions.
Meanwhile, the old relationships are loosening. Santiment data cited alongside the breadth report shows Bitcoin’s correlation with stocks, gold, and the dollar has weakened. That complicates any assumption that crypto simply follows equities lower.
The total crypto market cap sits near $2.96 trillion, down almost 3% in 24 hours. Bitcoin dominance is just above 57%.
Ethereum trades near $2,700. It’s also down about 3% on the day but still up 10% on the week, a relative-strength story covered further in recent ETH and SOL analysis.
What Could Break the Bullish Breadth Signal?
The path forward depends on two things holding at once. If the 88-of-100 breadth reading stays intact and Bitcoin remains inside its channel, the signal stays constructive. That means a bullish trend with prices still cheap relative to prior highs.
The downside scenario is just as clear. If the channel breaks and $82,400 fails, the constructive setup weakens fast. Breadth alone won’t be enough to hold the line.
Keep in mind that this reading is a snapshot of participation. It’s no guarantee that either market will keep moving in its current direction.
Melker framed the crypto vs stocks contrast bluntly. Weak breadth in stocks near highs has historically been a yellow flag. Strong breadth in crypto, with prices still far from their peaks, is the opposite setup entirely.
