Betting odds on Kalshi are signaling a lopsided view of Friday’s inflation report, with traders pricing just a 10% chance that August CPI comes in above 0.4% month-over-month, while a milder reading above 0.3% is seen as roughly 61% likely.

For Bitcoin markets, the immediate relevance is a macro question rather than a confirmed crypto-market move: whether the consumer-price data strengthens the case for higher rates and shifts broader risk sentiment.

What the Inflation Setup Is Showing

The available inflation data began with producer prices. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ August PPI release showed that final-demand prices rose 0.4% in August after an upwardly revised 0.1% increase in July. Traders subsequently raised their bets that the Fed would increase interest rates at its meeting next week.

Gold provided the clearest reported market response. Spot gold was up 0.2% at US$4,324.79 an ounce at 0020 GMT, but it was down more than 2% for the week and on track for a third consecutive weekly decline. December US gold futures were down 1% at US$4,364.70. Spot gold fell nearly 2% after the producer-price data.

Wael Makarem, financial markets strategist lead at Exness, said that a stronger-than-expected consumer-price reading could reinforce the case for several interest-rate increases, potentially lifting Treasury yields and the US dollar while adding pressure to gold. Rising interest rates can weigh on gold because the metal offers no yield.

The August CPI report was scheduled for release at 12.30 GMT on September 11. The actual reading, rather than expectations formed after the PPI report, is the key data point for assessing how markets may update their view of the Fed’s policy path.

Kalshi Betting Odds Point to Muted CPI Surprise Ahead of Fed’s Rate Decision

The first scenario: a stronger-than-expected CPI reading could reinforce the case for further interest-rate increases. In Makarem’s assessment, that could push Treasury yields and the US dollar higher and place additional pressure on gold. Notably, Kalshi betting odds currently price this outcome as unlikely, with only a 10% probability assigned to core CPI coming in above 0.4%.

A second possibility is that the CPI data does not materially alter the expectations that followed the August PPI report. In that case, the available evidence still leaves the Federal Reserve’s forthcoming meeting as the next focal point, without establishing a specific outcome for Bitcoin. This is the scenario Kalshi betting odds appear to favor, with 61% odds on CPI landing above the 0.3% threshold but not exceeding 0.4%.

A third scenario is simply that market participants wait for the published CPI figures and the Fed’s decision before drawing firmer conclusions. The sequence is clear: producer-price data had already strengthened rate-hike expectations, consumer-price data was due later that day, and the Fed meeting was scheduled for the following week.

Until those events occur, any Bitcoin implication remains conditional rather than a confirmed market development.
