Zcash started September by doing something that would have looked unlikely only a few months ago: pushing Dogecoin out of crypto’s top 10.
ZEC now ranks #10 on CoinMarketCap with a market capitalization of $13.45 billion, while Dogecoin has slipped to eleventh at around $12.55 billion. At the time of writing, there is almost a billion-dollar gap between them, but even one-hour price movements are enough to close or widen it.
The move follows an exceptional August for Zcash and renewed interest in privacy-focused assets – Grayscale has argued that AI-driven blockchain analysis could create a new wave of demand for financial privacy, putting Zcash’s shielded transactions back into focus.
The flip is interesting because it shows how quickly crypto’s established order can change – Dogecoin has spent years among the market’s largest assets, while Zcash is a decade-old project whose core privacy proposition has suddenly become relevant again.
For traders looking for the best altcoins to buy in September, differentiation may matter as much as simply chasing the largest names – and infrastructure is once again becoming important. Projects such as Bitcoin Hyper, which is building a new execution layer around Bitcoin, and LiquidChain (LIQUID), which wants to connect three major blockchains, are gaining ground, while XRP again offers an established large-cap alternative with institutional attention.
Bitcoin Hyper (HYPER): Making Bitcoin More Than Digital Gold
Zcash’s return to the top 10 is a reminder that an old crypto idea can suddenly become much more valuable when the market starts paying attention to its usefulness.
Bitcoin Hyper (HYPER) is making a similar argument around Bitcoin, for while BTC has succeeded spectacularly as a scarce digital asset, the rest of the market moved to considerably more sophisticated applications developed elsewhere. Ethereum became the home of DeFi, while Solana proved that blockchain applications could execute at speeds far beyond Bitcoin’s base layer.
Bitcoin Hyper is building a Solana-based Layer 2 intended to bring faster transfers to Bitcoin – finally making BTC suitable for real-world payments, trading, lending, and decentralized applications.
Bitcoin remains underneath as the final settlement network – transactions are batched up and ultimately settled on the base chain – but BTC’s value can be transferred near-instantly. The argument goes that BTC is great as gold, but why not also be currency?
HYPER itself is used for gas and smart contract execution on Layer 2, as well as for staking and governance.
The presale has already raised a massive $33 million, making it one of the largest presales of 2026. HYPER is priced at $0.01368, while presale staking currently offers 35% APY. The project’s smart contracts have undergone audits from Coinsult and SpyWolf.
Bitcoin has already won the battle to become valuable – HYPER wants to make that value easier to use.
LiquidChain (LIQUID): Connecting Crypto’s Biggest Pools of Capital
LiquidChain (LIQUID) takes a different view of where blockchain infrastructure goes next – multichain is the future.
Crypto spent years looking for a single dominant blockchain – but Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana have all thrived and developed increasingly different markets.
LiquidChain is building for this future – It’s one-of-a-kind Layer 3 combines a cross-chain virtual machine that brings all of their liquidity into one shared ocean, via a unified proof system capable of verifying all three chains at once.

That has practical consequences beyond no more bridges or wrapped assets – a decentralized exchange can find liquidity originating across several ecosystems, rather than relying on a single isolated market. Lending protocols can reach different pools of collateral and borrowers.
And developers can build one application capable of reaching Bitcoin holders, Ethereum DeFi, and Solana traders – deploy once rather than rebuild three times.
The LiquidChain whitepaper also describes atomic multichain execution, in which connected operations complete or roll back together, reducing the risk of a cross-chain transaction getting stuck halfway through.
LIQUID is priced at $0.0149, with the presale now raising $959,000 and moving steadily toward its first $1 million.
Staking currently offers 1,190% APY, and SpyWolf and CertiK have reviewed the project. Next, the roadmap takes LIQUID into public exchange trading.
The interesting part of LiquidChain’s thesis is that it does not require one of crypto’s largest ecosystems to fail – the more capital Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana accumulate independently, the larger the potential market becomes.
XRP: Institutional Infrastructure Keeps Growing Despite the Pullback
XRP gives this list a very different option – unlike HYPER and LIQUID, there is no presale or early-stage launch ahead. XRP is already one of the market’s largest cryptocurrencies, currently priced at $1.3179, although it has fallen 3.90% over 24 hours and 6.62% across the past week.
The price weakness comes despite continued expansion around Ripple’s institutional business: Ripple and SettleMint announced a partnership on September 1 that combines Ripple Custody with SettleMint’s Digital Asset Lifecycle Platform.
The system is aimed at regulated financial institutions wanting one platform for custody, issuance, compliance, settlement, and servicing of tokenized assets, initially in Asia-Pacific, with broader expansion planned.
Institutional XRP trading has also become increasingly established – but as with any large altcoin, the market has already had years to price in expectations, and future 10x moves are unlikely.
HYPER and LIQUID, meanwhile, are attempting to build new infrastructure from relatively early starting points.
On the flip side, XRP already has exchange liquidity, regulated investment products, and an established ecosystem behind it.
So its recent decline may therefore appeal to traders who prefer buying an existing large-cap asset during weakness rather than entering a project before launch.
Which Altcoins Could Lead the Way in September?
Zcash overtaking Dogecoin is more than a reshuffling of two tickers: ZEC has returned to crypto’s top 10 because a distinctive idea – private digital money – has suddenly regained serious market attention.
That is a useful lesson to keep in mind as we consider what comes next: altcoins do not all need to compete over the same narrative.
Bitcoin Hyper is targeting programmable Bitcoin and real-world use of BTC. LiquidChain is building infrastructure for a market where several major blockchains remain successful simultaneously. XRP already operates at the institutional end of crypto payments and tokenized financial infrastructure.
September has already shown that the crypto rankings are far from permanent – the altcoins that move next may be the ones offering the market something it cannot easily get elsewhere.
